How to Write When You Don’t Know What to Write

I’ve written about this before from a different angle. I wrote about writing when you don’t really feel like writing. Writing anyway. This brief essay is about what to write about when you don’t feel like writing. The essay is not just about when you don’t feel about writing, but how to find ideas to write about at any time. It’s not exhaustive, but hopefully it’s enough to get you started when you can’t think of anything to write about.

Write about current events

You can write about your own opinions and feelings about current events and things going on in the news. Think of it and write about it in ways similar to an op-ed column in the newspaper. Evaluate the issue, take a stand, substantiate and support your views and explain how things might be different or better and what steps could be taken to improve matters.

Write about things you know

Everyone knows a lot about some area or topic or hobby or interest. You know much more than you think you do. Is there anything that you talk a lot about given the opportunity? Anything you find yourself gravitating toward in what you read or watch or search about? Whatever it is, if you can think about it, you can write about it. If you can talk about it, you can write about it.

What things interest you

What kinds of things do you like to talk about? Politics? Books? Games?Religion? Note taking apps? Anime? Sports? Crypto? Geeky tech stuff? Romance? Cooking? Travel? Whatever you like learning and talking about, you can write about. Just imagine that you’re talking to your best friend about it and write the way you would talk to your best friend. You can edit it later, but this will help you get it out. How would you explain the things you like to a friend who asked you about it?

Conclusion

There are many more ideas like this. Now that i’ve got you thinking, I’m pretty sure you will come up with even better ideas on your own. I hope you do. And I hope that you start writing. I’m looking forward to reading whatever you come up with.
